Acanthopagrus australis

Other Names: Bream, Yellowfin Bream, Surf Bream, Sea Bream, Eastern Black Bream.

Size: 66 cm

Family: Sparidae, the porgy/bream family.

Distribution: The east coast of Most of Australia, including NSW, about the southern 2/3 of QLD, and some of VIC. Endemic to Australia. There are several bream species around the Australian coast. The Silver Bream is the common NSW species.

Status: Least concern.

Habitat: Sheltered sand, reefs.

Uses: Popular species with recreational/sport fishers.

Field Marks: The Silver Bream has a small black spot at the top of where its pectoral fin joins its body. It's lower fins usually have a yellowish tinge, hence it's other name of Yellowfin Bream.

Breeding: Spawns in late autumn to winter at the entrance to estuaries. Their eggs drift out to sea, and the small juvenile bream return to their estuaries a month later.
